The Arts Are The Answer Anniversary

Little did we know 16 months ago when Paulette Lynch, Paul Congo and I sat around the table at amp that our plans would result in a dynamic local Arts program with so much potential. Plus, spinning off 8 additional programs during our first year with interviews of Internationally known Artists such as Belle Yang, Kim Weston, Lucas Blok, David Ligare and many more! The title is the brainchild of Arts Council for Monterey County Executive Director Paulette Lynch who, quite rightfully, ascribes to the philosophy that no matter what the concern or impediment, an answer can be found through the Arts. Her beliefs have been borne out time and again during program interviews with Monterey County Artists and Arts Organizations. So what’s on tap for Season II? Stay tuned, as we’re unveiling a new Calendar, a new dynamic format and another season full of great Artists, Arts Organizations, and reasons to believe The Arts Are the Answer!

Our Ocean Our Sanctuary Our Community

It’s a bigger subject than any blog could cover, but we’ll try to start the ball rolling. Time and time again we hear the Ocean is in trouble…and it’s absolutely true. How do we get the information out and who’s going to fund the process?  Video is one of the strongest forms of outreach available. Nielsen posits that the average American family watches over 6 hours of television per day. A chunk of that viewing is now moving over to computers…witness the millions of videos uploaded to YouTube on a weekly basis. Video is what people are seeking to inform and entertain themselves. However, the standard broadcast motto of “if it bleeds it leads” just doesn’t seem appropriate for saving our Oceans. We need to balance the “crisis call” with positive news about how people are making a difference;  how beautiful many areas of Ocean still are, and how Sanctuaries and marine preservation areas are able to remedy sections of Ocean that were in trouble. The Big 5 networks currently dominating television broadcasting in the USA aren’t going to devote a hefty portion of their money machines to saving the Ocean. That’s where Community Television steps in. Public, Educational and Government access could be the grassroots foundation for furthering the agenda of the Environmental Movement to save our Oceans. Look what Community Media did for Democracy …making transparency in government as common as cartoons for kids.  Access Monterey Peninsula has taken the cause of saving FlowerCoralour Ocean into our core mission. . Our first step was to create a program called “Your Sanctuary“. Fortunately, it was enjoyed by most who viewed it and  the program carriage grew to over 85 stations. But a single program can’t give Community Media Centers sufficient muscle to knock the ball out of the park. We need a constant and consistent stream of Ocean Conservation video. This was the motivation behind starting “Your Sanctuary TV”. To launch a portal of quality Ocean Conservation video that Community Media Centers across the country and throughout the globe can visit and download quality content free of charge…that’s right…FREE, because none of us has the funding to purchase programming.. We invite you to visit yoursanctuarytv.org, We also welcome content creators to join us in this effort. Our current inventory numbers over 100 programs of varying length;  from 2-minute shorts to over 80 “30-minute” programs. So if you would like extra distribution for your program, contact us at this blog. Please join us as we take this first swing at saving our most precious natural resource. Community Media Centers can make a difference and joining together to save the Ocean starts right now.

Home of ATT Park, SF Giants, Transamerica Pyramid, Golden Gate Bridge, Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, and the Alliance for Community Media National Conference where amp Community Television’s co-production with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Your Sanctuary TV will be presented to over 400 Television Stations this coming Wednesday….what a day and night we have planned…It all starts at 7am when the early risers gather, sucking up the Starbucks and laying out the Pop Ups for Four Full booths in the Exhibit Hall at the Westin St. Francis. There’ll be folks from the Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones, and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries…dignitaries from the Washington DC Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Dan Basta and Matt Stout…and amp staff on hand to build an exhibit 4 booths long. We’re expecting over 400 folks to traipse by our digs as we’ll be giving away a beautiful DVD collection of Ocean video programs and shorts. The type of content community TV stations across the country will enjoy broadcasting. Along with that there will be plenty of information about our National Marine Sanctuaries, Thank You Ocean, and our other partners. Plus, tickets for the Welcome Reception Giveaway, overseen by the comedy duo Michel and LZ, two guys are act normal during the day but become wild and crazy after 5pm…which is a good thing since that’s when they’ll be giving away prizes at the Your Sanctuary TV Welcome Reception…great stuff like Rocket Boat Rides, Catamaran Sails, Alcatraz Tours, Tickets to SF Playhouse, and very special tickets to visit ATT Park and see our own SF Giants take on their cross town rivals…the Oakland A’s. After the remarks, more giveaways then it’s all hands on the streets for a mad dash to Pier 39 and the Aquarium of the Bay. Here the crowd will be treated to succulent desserts and tasty dessert wines in the Cafe, followed by a grand self-guided tour of the amazing underwater Aquarium of the Bay. Then it’s back to the Westin for any additional imbibing…or maybe out on the town for those who still have some gas…what a blast. Not to be forgotten will be the special session offered Thursday from 10:30a to 12p starring that comedy duo Paul and Steve, who shed their wacky evening personas for more formal facades in order to present: “Extending Your Reach Through Strategic Collaborations: A Passion For Place”. Yep…this year’s ACM conference will be a blast and it launches tomorrow morning…don’t miss the trip blog as timid Pacific Grove resident Steve E. makes his way north in harrowing holiday traffic to land in luxury at the Westin St. Francis on Union Square…an adventure in any language :}

What Is Your Sanctuary TV?

Image

This is the most common question in my life right now…What is Your Sanctuary TV? Even though we have press releases, a Color Brochure, a ton of emails, a website, a treatment and many other explanations/descriptions/examples. Still, the question hangs over my head like the dirty cloud over Charles Schultz‘ character “Pigpen”. So to disperse the cloud cover and open up a shiny Spring day, I’ll answer the question once again: Your Sanctuary TV is a website that will act as a portal for Earth and Ocean Video Content from a multiplicity of providers including amp Community Television, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, NOAA, Thank You Ocean, Waterways, the National Park Service, Everglades National Park, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations Environment Programme, Cartoonist/Activist Jim Toomey, and more. And just like the old Ginzu Knife commercials….but wait…there’s more! Your Sanctuary TV is also a website with direct links to all 13 National Marine Sanctuaries and 1 National Marine Monument. Your Sanctuary TV is a listing of Stewardship Organizations and links to their websites: Save Our Shores, Save the Whales, and Marine Life Studies are three great examples. Most importantly, Your Sanctuary TV represents an open door to the 600 plus Community Television Stations across the Country. On May 29th, Your Sanctuary will be presented to these stations and the over 100 programs available for free download will be showcased. In the end, Your Sanctuary TV is another tool of technology for generating massive numbers of impressions in the hope that these impressions will inspire viewers to participate in stewardship efforts and conservation methods that serve to protect and preserve precious natural resources for future generations. That’s what it’s all about and we hope you join us. For information or to become a video/informational partner please email info@yoursanctuarytv.org. Thanks for listening…spde

Your Sanctuary TV Will Be Reality

The launch of Your Sanctuary TV on June 8th represents the culmination of 2 years of Production, Collaboration, Public Relations, Marketing, Convention Sponsorships, DVD duplication, Conference Calls, Emails, and so much more…but it will be well worth it. We started out with a magazine format television program, “Your Sanctuary” whose mission was to engage viewers […]

The USA Will Be Okay So Let’s Create a PNN (Positive News Network)

YoungPeople2In spite of what we see on the local and national news, if the maxim that our future is  our next generations holds true, I’ve seen some great evidence that the USA will be okay in the coming years. First time I mentioned this was a month ago. Having experienced the Next Generation Jazz Festival presented by Monterey Jazz Festival for nearly 50 hours from Friday through Sunday, I was introduced to a fresh-faced, polite, passionate group of young musicians. This experience was enough to bolster my beliefs in the future of our country. Now, it’s time to sound the trumpet once again. For the past several weeks, our television station and internet sites have been abuzz about an event taking place today, May 5th. It’s a benefit for the Salvation Army, and includes a lineup of 3 local bands whose members are in their teens, several still in high school. They’re performing simply for their love of music and to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. The organizer of this wonderful event is Aaron Dally, a talented young musician. The benefit is Aaron’s Eagle Scout project. His father, Dave Dally is one of the foremost musical forces of the Central Coast. Along with being a virtuoso on violin, Dave conducts the MPC Orchestra, several strings groups, and plays in a multiplicity of bands including Monterey International and the  Monterey String Quartet. Like the Next Generation musicians, Aaron is passionate, ambitious and also polite. He refers to me as “Mr. Ellzey”. Since my own son started calling me Steve when he was 12 years old, having a young person refer to me as “Mr. Ellzey” really sets them apart from the crowd.

So if you’d like to hear some great music, dance a little, and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, come to the Carmel Youth Center today, May 5th from 2:30p to 5p. Please bring clothes or food as a donation. And get ready to experience some talented, passionate, young musicians, who will make you realize the USA’s going to be in good hands when we pass on the baton. And I include my own son in that group. He completed his Eagle Scout project last year and is one of the talented young  musicians donating his time today for the cause. For this I say, the USA will be okay, despite the gnarly headlines and if-it-bleeds-it-leads stories on our local news. Maybe it’s time to create PNN….Positive News Network, where we hear all about the Aaron Dally’s of the world…..what do you think….are we ready for that?

The Alliance for Community Media (ACM) announced recently that amp2‘s Your Sanctuary TV is this year’s National Conference Title Sponsor. The ACM Conference will take place May 29th through 31st in San Francisco, CA at the stately Westin St. Francis on Union Square. Appropriately enough, San Francisco Bay is on the edge of or adjacent to 3 separate National Marine Sanctuaries, namely The Gulf of the Farallones NMS, Cordell Bank NMS, and Monterey Bay NMS. The Gulf of the Farallones operates a Visitors Center at Historic Crissy Field very close to the Golden Gate Bridge and next to another landmark, Fort Mason. “With all the maritime heritage and history, Your Sanctuary TV seems an ideal Title Sponsor for this year’s conference”, remarked amp Executive Director Paul Congo. “And part of our welcome gift to attendees is a special visit to the Aquarium of the Bay,” added amp’s Outreach Coordinator Lindsey Bishop. “Your Sanctuary TV is a repository of quality Ocean and Earth Conservation video content that will be offered free of charge to members of the Alliance and all other community television stations across the country and throughout the world,” noted YSTV Executive Producer Stephen Ellzey. Among the dozens of quality programs available is a documentary by acclaimed Ocean filmmaker Robert Talbot on the Great White Sharks that favor both the Farallones and the outer edges of Monterey Bay as hunting grounds. Additional programming includes the popular Thank You Ocean PSA  and Podcast series and a collection of animated Ocean shorts by Cartoonist/Environmentalist Jim Toomey, who regularly pens “Shermans Lagoon”. “It”s hard to believe,” recalled amp Production Manager Michael Maritnes,”that 2 years ago we were sitting around the office dreaming about an Ocean Series called “Your Sanctuary” and now we’re launching an entire library of Ocean and Earth conservation content…it’s a real dream come true” The Your Sanctuary TV site yoursanctuarytv.org will go live on June 8th, which is World Oceans Day.

Your Sanctuary TV has added a content partner that will bring new worlds of wildlife, color and historic sites to the video vault. Waterways, (a co-production of the National Park Service, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and the Environmental Protection Agency) has agreed to allow Your Sanctuary TV to distribute 66 episodes of their spectacular program. Produced by the talented Erik Hutchins of Keys Digital Video, the program is brimming with underwater photography, wildlife images, and tightly scripted stories of the Southern Florida ocean and Everglades National Park. Here’s how  a Waterways brochure describes the program:

” For more than 15 years, “Waterways” has been educating viewers on the wonders of the world’s third largest coral reef, the diverse and colorful marine life that call it home, and centuries of cultural and maritime heritage. Experience cutting edge research and conservation from the comfort of your home! Learn how scientists are combating invasive species, protecting endangered animals, and promoting sustainable use of America’s great natural treasures. Get up close and personal with lionfish, alligators and panthers, or discover the secrets of historic forts and shipwrecks.”

“We are so grateful and so excited to welcome Waterways into the Your Sanctuary TV family”, said Executive Producer Steve Ellzey. “Having a program with such high production values and informative stories is absolutely  fabulous!”

Your Sanctuary TV, a repository of Ocean and Earth Conservation Video and Information, is set to launch on June 8th which is World Oceans Day.
