He’s the Big Daddy when it comes to Big Movies, so when James Cameron speaks….people listen. After all, he produced blockbusters that are practically household names: Terminator, Rambo First Blood, True Lies, Titanic and most recently, Avatar. During his keynote at the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and Conference, Mr. Cameron told the audience about an ongoing conversation with fellow Ocean Advocate Dr. Sylvia Earle. The meat of the matter, is whether someone who is carnivorous can also be a Conservationist. According to Mr. Cameron, the answer is an emphatic no. No to hot wings, no to BBQ, no to In and Out Burger. While we understand Mr. Cameron’s perspective: harming other species in order to sustain ourselves can seem harsh and brutal to those of us who buy our animal protein all packaged up and pretty….but what about entire populations who depend on fish for most of their protein? Does this mean that a Pacific Islander who descended from centuries of fishermen should sell the boat, burn the net and plant some yams? If anything, Mr. Cameron’s comment is truly food for thought.
